Guess what?! Yesterday was great!

Do you know why?

Guess what we did!

Shit burning detail! WOOHOO!!!

The target:

After the generator broke last night, there's no water to run our old latrine trailers. Even though we already had the porta-potties, these broke-ass toilets were dragged out of storage to use as a backup. We got to learn how to burn shit.

---

The suspect:

We got these fancy masks to use so we could pretend we couldn't smell the lovely mix of diesel and feces. And while it seemed like a good idea at the time, they're not very easy to smoke in.

---

The evidence:

One of the lovely barrels. Luckily, they hadn't been used much since yesterday, so there wasn't much to burn. We dumped it all into this barrel, poured diesel on top, and an empty pack of cigarettes as a starter. I was one of the lucky ones to not grab a big tent pole and stir it around. Maybe tomorrow. After it died down a bit, we smothered it in dirt, dumped the ash in a hole to get covered up, and put the barrel back under the toilets.

Fun!

---

More fun

Speaking of the power being out, it was hot as hell in our bays last night. So hot, a bunch of people slept outside on the roof instead of inside. That first cot there is mine, with the mosquito net I slept under.

---

The breeze felt great as we were getting ready to sleep, but it got a lot colder than we expected later on. This guy moved under the awning to get out of the wind.

---

That's the roof.

---

Not everybody used the roof...

Oh.... Smells like a barrel of... Eh. Not my favorite smell.

Something I've noticed though... People in the SCA and at Burning Man were very nice with there port-o-let usage. Rarely was anything on the seat or floors... These being events people are usually drunk, it's dark, or on some other substance, or maybe not! However, going to a mundane event, in the middle of the afternoon with people who are sober, I've seen the worst privs. Enough so that I usually don't trust them at a state fair at all, and will hold it till I get home...

Greetings. If you are getting this message, that means that you either are in Iraq, were in Iraq, will be in Iraq, or are an Iraqi or Iraqi ex-pat. There are about 50 such people on LiveJournal that I have found so far -- most of them soldiers or contractors who are currently in Iraq -- and I wanted to do something to help bring them together.

For this reason, you are invited to join insideiraq, the first LiveJournal community specifically for those in Iraq. The community is "members only", at least for the time being, as the intent was to create a space where those who are actually there (or going there) can find each other and converse with each other with some degree of privacy, without being buried in a ton of political posts.

If this sounds like something of interest to you, please click here to find out more, become a member, and get started.

Best,
Mark Kraft
