From first to last... post!

Three days ago, FOB Gabe was hit by five 57" rockets. They cut pretty much through the center of camp, all in a straight line. We heard three explosions at first, and thought we were getting mortared. Later reports told us that they found tubes and fins from rockets, and also that there were five hits, not three. Two people got minor shrapnel wounds to the face, but were otherwise fine.

Two nights ago, we got reports of insurgents at a nearby Iraqi police checkpoint. One of our platoons went to check it out and were fired upon. Some Iraqi police arrived and started firing on the insurgents. Then, the gate manned by the same unit that tried to blow me up started firing on everybody in the fight, not knowing our people were out there (even though we had reported we were going out there, and not ten minutes before our people had gone through their gate). Our guys started firing back at what they thought was a new threat - which technically it was - and their rounds flew over the burm surrounding our camp and hit some buildings. It was neat watching the tracers zing over our heads. Neat but sucky. Luckily only two people were hurt, two of the Iraqi policeman.

So yeah, that was one of the great moments in communication breakdowns.

Also, I don't remember if I mentioned it before, but the commanding general and the sergeant major for Operation Iraqi Freedom had a tour of our post a couple weeks ago. We just heard yesterday that our post was voted the second worst of all the posts out here.

Oh yeah, and this morning we were told we are reinstating the shit burning detail since the Iraqi water trucks have stopped coming to fill up our latrines.
